Voice vs. Data Assignment Requirements Write 3-4 sentences for each of these services, describing whether they use voice or data networks: * Cell phones * Landline phones * SMS / Text Messaging * Fax Machines * Pagers * VOIP (voice over IP) phones * Skype / Facetime Cell Phones – Cellular phones are used for both voice and data communications. An example would be a person talking on a cell phone. It uses voice communications and then gets sent back to the base station. Data technology is also used on smartphones which allow the user to browse the internet and download files. Landline Phones – Landline phones typically only use voice communications. Some newer landline phones can use what is called a NCID (Network Caller ID) which uses data sent over a TCP connection. SMS/Text Messaging – The SMS (Short Message Service) can be used in a variety of ways. A few examples include; cellular phones, GPRS systems, and web texting. SMS does not use any voice technology which is why it is sent over data networks. Fax Machines – Fax machines contain analog modems. This type of modem technology uses the voice network technology. When the receiving end handles a fax connection it listens for a digital connection that has been converted from an analog signal using a voice network. Pagers – Pagers (also known as beepers), were primarily used over data networks by sending numerical short messages similar to the SMS service. Since the introduction of data pagers, voice pagers have also emerged. These types of pagers use a voice network to transmit a short audio message that the user can then retrieve. VOIP Phones – VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), is a technology that can transmit audio messages over an internet protocol.
