Poetry Explication – “Alone”

Edgar Allen Poe must have lived a very lonely life from what this poem implies. Many people have experienced what Poe has as well. Many children are left alone because sometimes both parents are working to keep their house as “homely” as possible, while others have parents who totally ignore and neglect their children causing them to become lonely. Many of these children learn to deal with it and so does Edgar Allen Poe eventually. In his poem, “Alone”, Poe uses a lot of repetition which can show the points that he thinks are important for people to know. He uses the word “From” constantly from lines 11 – 15. He wants to show us that you can take him anywhere but he would still feel lonely. He says that “And all I lov’d – I loved alone” meaning that everything he loved he could not share with anyone else and had to keep it to himself because he is lonely. There is also some symbolism in this poem. Towards the end Poe says “From the thunder, and the storm – And the cloud that took the form” Here the thunder symbolizes the fact that he is alone because lightning only strikes once. The clouds can symbolize that his mind is not clear because whatever he hasn’t had anyone to help him clear his mind and the clouds can also symbolize depression which can perfectly describe Poe. Poe was a very strange man who was lonely for most of his life because of the poems and stories that he wrote. This poem is a perfect example of how his childhood
