Drug Trafficking in the United States ENG 122 August 1st, 2012 Drug trafficking in the United States is a very big problem and will always continue to be a problem. There are so many different routes that drug trafficker’s use in the United States but the route that this paper will explain is the Florida/Kentucky pipeline. The Kentucky/Florida pipeline is a route that drug traffickers use to bring pain pills from Florida into Kentucky for street distribution and for trade. Kentucky is a state that is known for the consumption of pain pills, therefore this pipeline has become one of the biggest routes. Once the drug traffickers arrive in Florida, they go to the pain clinics in Florida which will give anyone whatever they want in exchange for money. The clinics will take an MRI of the patient and even if nothing is wrong with the patient, they will change their MRI to look like something is wrong so that they can give the patient pain medication. They charge the patients that come into the clinic lots of money because they don’t accept insurance and in return, they give them thousands of dollars in pills that they can sale on the street. The cash only doctor offices in Florida will supply the patients with Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, and Xanax. Oxycodone is a very powerful pain medication that is given to patients with severe injuries. Hydrocodone is another type of a pain medication that is given to patients that have a severe amount of pain or a medium amount of pain. Xanax is a nerve pill that is given to patients usually that has extensive nerve problems and Xanax will help the patients stay calm so that they don’t get anxious. The doctors give certain reasons for giving the patient each one of the medications. The doctors state that the reason that they give the patients the Oxycodone is for the severe pain that the patients are having when they are first seen at the clinic, the Hydrocodone is supposedly for the break through pain, and the Xanax is what the doctor proscribes the patients and state that they have anxiety or a nerve problem. All three of these medications are very valuable on the street market.
