Gap Analysis: Riordan Riordan Manufacturing opened a production facility in China. Because it flourished, Riordan's CEO wanted to add another facility. By adding another facility, Michael Riordan hopes to provide the company with additional international opportunities. The competition in China results in a lack of skilled labor; however, labor from nearby countries is available to Riordan Manufacturing. Using workers from these other countries requires Riordan Manufacturing to consider cross-cultural issues. One of the countries from which Riordan is considering hiring employees is Pakistan. Four types of laws are viewed around the world: Islamic law, socialist law, common law, and civil or code law (Hodgetts, Luthrans, and Doh, 2005). Islamic law would be a concern of Riordan if Pakistan were considered as one of the countries from which workers would be hired. In addition to considering laws within China, Riordan would have to consider the legal and regulatory environment of the other countries as well. First, Riordan wants to provide quality products to customers at a fair price. Second, Riordan wants to provide a working environment that is acceptable to employees. Third, Riordan wants to open an additional facility to increase production. This will provide additional products for customers, and it will provide additional jobs for employees. Gap Analysis To provide quality products at a fair price to the Riordan customers, Riordan will have to be smart regarding how they operate their facilities. Technology could be used to improve the quality and lower the cost; but technology alone should not be used. Instead, Riordan should attempt to mix manpower and technology to provide the customers with products that will benefit them and will keep them coming back to Riordan Manufacturing for business. To provide a working environment that is acceptable to employees, Riordan will have to consider laws and regulations of the employee’s countries. The Islamic employees, for example, will require taking a moment for prayer at certain times during the day. This could be accommodated easily. This would make the place of business a pleasant one for these employees. If the employees are happy at their place of business, the quality of the products will be higher than they would be if the employee was unhappy.
