When one thinks of the Middle Ages, the first images to form in the mind are usually of castles, kings, queens, and of course, the faithful knights that serve them. Most people, both young and old, are familiar with King Arthur’s Round Table, which has been presented in literature for centuries and later brought into the world of film and television. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, an alliterative poem written by an unknown author of the 14th century, both reinforces and challenges the Knight’s code of chivalry. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” opens with the story of how various cities were built by heroes after the fall of Troy. After the brief history, the author introduces the setting at Camelot.
Kristy Everett Ms.Burns-6th PAP English-II 14 May, 2012 Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” is a short story about a prince who invites a thousand of his “lighthearted friends” to a masked ball, while the rest of his kingdom is dying from a plague. When the narrator describes seven different colored chambers in the prince’s castle, suddenly a stranger appears described as the Red Death. Prospero becomes angry that someone with such little humor would join his masque ball. At once the Prince orders the guest to remove his mask, but no one dares to go near him. The Prince then chases the stranger through six of the seven chambers, but when the masked stranger approaches and enters the seventh chamber, which is the black room, he falls dead upon the floor.
Benjamin Franklin: As for a leader, I believe I have a few characteristics of a “leader” … I recently published my successful “Poor Richards Almanac”, which in my opinion tells what all moral beings should strive to do. Kayden: Thanks so much for your time mister Franklin. What about you Patrick, do you consider yourself to being a leader in this time in history? Franklin and Henry show an odd expression for his choice of wording. Patrick Henry: Eh, I would say I am quite a bit of a leader.
They are said to have joked around a lot, seemingly having fun while playing a prank by coming “early to the Queen’s bedchamber one morning; dressed in short coats of Kentish cloth, with hoods, bows and arrows, like Robin Hood”. What this implies is that the King trusts his nobility enough that he allows them into the Queen’s chamber. They continued to enjoy themselves later at dinner, when Henry “arranged the seating and joked with all; and had [them] parade in strange costumes before they brought in actors to stage a play.” This could be seen as showing that Henry very much enjoyed the company of his nobility, counting them as his friends. Source 2 is from a proclamation issued by Henry himself, in July 1511, as he was about to go to war with France. Due to the war at hand, “The King commanded all the lords and most of the nobles to prepare as many able men for war as they can muster from their
He entered the reception wearing a dress that he could not zip up all the way up and danced around the dance floor, celebrating his brother’s wedding. All these and security were within. Without was the “Red Death.” What a wonderful ball the prince was hosting-or could it just have been a distraction from the fact that death would soon befall everyone? All the revelers were in their own little world at the party, but every time the ebony clock from the seventh room rang, it was like a check into reality. Everyone quieted and became nervous, realizing that death is approaching. The castle was secure and safe from the outside world but without a sanctuary, you would most likely contract the Red Death and die soon.
