This semester, I volunteered at Bluevale Collegiate Institute in Waterloo. More specifically, I provide assistance in the LAC (Learning Assistance Classroom). The LAC is run by one teacher, and she has three full time EAs, one part-time helper, and me working in the classroom. The main teacher doesn’t really work with the students a lot. She is mostly in her office or running from classroom to classroom, talking to the teachers of the students in LAC and keeping track of what each student is working on and has to complete. Students come to the LAC to receive help with homework, write tests, or just to hang out and relax throughout the day. Most of the students that I have met in the classroom seem completely normal but they come to LAC…show more content…
This point was witnessed when I saw Connor doing a math assignment on commissions. The assignment was ten questions, all in the exact same format using different number examples, but the EA had to explain how to complete every question and mostly completed the assignment on her own. The worksheet was structured so that each person made a base salary, 5% commission on the first $20,000 in sales, and 8% on any sales above $20,000. Pertaining to the point made above, he had to add all of the numbers using the calculator. As insignificant as that sounds, he was using the calculator to calculate equations like $1000 plus $550. It was evident that Connor had not developed a mastery level understanding of simple math concepts and is now imprisoned by having to use a calculator for all math that he does. It is questionable that Connor has achieved the second level of Bloom’s taxonomy: comprehension. Achieving comprehension means understanding the material being communicated without relating it to anything else (Woolfolk et al, 2006). David has the knowledge (Bloom’s first level) that he needs to add the two numbers together to get the total, but he has not mastered simple math and is unable to quickly make simple calculations in his
