John Oakhurst takes the leading position of the group of outcasts on their trek out of Poker Flat. When the others want to stop for rest, he urges them to continue their long journey. Oakhurst’s gambling being the reason he was banned from Poker Flat, he warns his fellow outcasts of, “throwing up their hand before the game was played out” (485) since heavy snow is expected on their route to the next town. His motivational attitude helps him and the others cope with their difficult situation. Oakhurst also serves as a paternal figure to Tom “The Innocent” throughout the story, which he had beaten in poker before and returned his winnings.
Harte introduces this idea first when the main character, John Oakhurst, has a run in with Tom and Piney who are running away to get married. John recognizes Tom as a kid he cleaned out in a game of poker. Afterwards John returns the money saying ‘Tommy, you’re a good little man, but you can’t gamble worth a cent. Don’t try it ever again’ (Par. 11).
Throughout the movie “C” sees a guy who owes him money and “C” would always try to catch him so he can get his revenge. “C” kept that up until Sonny took him for a walk and said, "It costs you $20 to get rid of him." Which meant the money that the guy owes “C” basically insured that the bum will never bug “C” again. Basic Sony advice like this is given to “C“throughout the picture. But the most important positive influence comes in a stairway.
Liars Poker Book Summary Liar’s poker begins with Michael Lewis’s journey of becoming an investment banker for the Solomon Brothers during the late 1970’s through the late 1980’s. First when Michael interviewed for Lehman Brothers he was rejected on the spot when he said something that he thought they wanted to hear. When asked why he wanted to be an investment banker, he replied, “ I want to make money”. From this he learned that even though most people on Wall Street did it for the money, he must play the game of Liars Poker and keep these reasons hidden. After not receiving the job at Lehman Brothers, Michael was invited to a dinner from a cousin in London with the queen.
For example, the most obvious archetype is that of a crooked loan-shark. This would be Harry “The Hatchet” from “Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” that cheats in the high-stakes poker style card game and tricks Eddy into betting more money than he had just so that he could take JD's bar, owned by Eddy's father. In the film “RocknRolla” the crooked loan-shark would be Lenny Cole, who tricks One Two and Mumbles into buying a property with a loan that he provides to them. However, Lenny manages to sabotage One Two's and Mumbles's plan for the property by using his connections. Another archetype found in the films is the right hand man of the main anti-hero.
Starting with John Oakhurst, a gambler, already showing a group of people who in today’s world like back then have a somewhat negative stereotype, especially if their families suffer financial problems from their habits. However, Mr. Oakhurst ended up bringing the group of people together to help each other when they were stranded, making sure everyone obtained enough to eat and places to sleep. He refused to simply send them out to fend for themselves. As quoted in the story, “He was too much of a gambler to not accept fate, with him life was at best an uncertain game, and he recognized the usual percentage in favor of the dealer” (71). So although he is a gambler, he is a smart one, and knew how to handle money, but still make a profit, and was a level headed person when it came to his profession and life.
I have just finished reading the novel No Limit by Pete Hauntman. Chapter by chapter the novel is getting very interesting, and more trouble is falling on the main character Dennis’s shoulder. The story starts when, Dennis wins big in his first game he ever played, and he acts like he has been playing poker for a long time. Little did he know that his ego made him lose all the money he had while playing a professional in another match. Dennis took this loss as a win, and began to study the game of poker.
When the book opens, we see Chris hitchhiking into the wilderness trying to get away from society when he gets a lift from Jim Gallien. Chris was going to hitchhike to Denali National Park and get away from society and be free. Jim Gallien picked him up and drove him there. When he dropped him off, Chris did not bring much and his only food was a ten pound bag of rice because he wanted to experience the wild and be a part of it. In college at the Emory University, he never had a good social life with people and Krakauer states when people tried to talk to him at parties, “It was hard to get him to open up.” His studies were the only thing he was interested in talking about .” He never interacted great with society and wanted to get away as much as he could.
In McCarthy’s, No Country for Old Men, money plays a significant role when it comes to ethical decision making. In the beginning, Llewelyn Moss comes across a crime scene where drug traffickers and drug dealers are brutally murdered by a third party, in pursuit for the money. Regardless, Moss greedily steals the money but leads him and his family to dangerous situations. In addition, Carson Wells is hired as a bounty hunter to kill Anton Chigurh and get the money, however, he ends up dying in the process. Finally, the crime and violence over money is so senseless, that Sheriff Ed-Tom Bell retires to prevent his life from being taken away.
