Both the text 1984 and the film V for Vendetta are satires that criticize humanity, society, and individual thought. Orwell and Brothers both make an effort to criticize each of their government’s practice of manipulation. For example, “Ignorance is Strength” sheds light on the oxymoronic messages the government expresses that manipulate their people. It shows that the government wants people to be ignorant and not to second think their actions or what is being fed to their minds, particularly. Thereby, it makes the government superior and in control of what people know about itself, its affairs, and even what they know about themselves.
The Declaration of Independence persuaded other colonist to separate from England, to stand against the King, and to fight for independence. The reasons colonist wanted to revolt against England were mostly because of the King and how selfish and unfair he was. Colonist believed all men were created equal, so therefore when the King put himself above everyone else, it displeased the colonist. In the Declaration of Independence it states “He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.” Colonist used the selfish things the King did to persuade others to revolt. The King tried to force men to give up their rights to make laws.
This action leads to him being considered a tragic hero. Creon’s human flaw of arrogance causes him to ignore reasoning and advice and listen only to his own thoughts. He states, "My voice is the one voice giving orders in this city". He is afraid to go back on his word because it will hurt his pride and he is afraid that it will cause him to lose power with his subjects. This action causes him to lose everyone that he loves.
She had some examples but one analogy was with violence, “If at times violence can be used to counter violence, why should lies never be used to counter lies”. Where is she going with this? Is she stating that it is ok to lie to liars more though is she saying it is ok to use violence to counter violence. Throughout this book the author is stating lying is bad and deceitful but also now she is talking about is it ok to fight lies with lies. I also noticed throughout the book that when she referred to a liar it was always him or he, why does the person lying always have to be a male in her eyes.
He has women that always want to be around him; he starts to fit into society. John is the third character. Unhappy in Utopia because he finds it dull since no one really has a choice. John learned about religion, and freedom on the reservation, so he is unhappy with the utopian government because it can not provide those freedoms. He tries to start a revolution to show the people freedom, but they are not smart enough to comprehend his
Comparative Government V for Vendetta 2/25/12 V for Vendetta The government tried to put a stop to V’s criminal yet heroic activities but they couldn’t seem to get the better of the man. The defense of the nation was entirely upon V’s back yet he proved his point any single time he wished. He was unstoppable, fueled by the ideals and thoughts of a society that wasn’t taken down by corruptness or greed; he wanted a society that was for the people, not a society for the chancellor. People for the most part tried to remain in a normal standard of living but the population grew scared as the chancellor became more powerful and turned into that of a dictator. V saw something in Evey no one else did, he saw
Readers are often angered by the ending of 1984 because of Winston’s betrayal of his previous life for the acceptance of the party. This is a semi-appropriate ending because of the impossibility of going against the party because of their total control of all people’s lives through the use of fear, which had not been accomplished by any authoritarian regime before the rise of the party. The novel’s ending was semi-appropriate because it stresses a society where all people are equal, but on the contrary makes it so that people must give up all of their freedoms and have all of their aspects of life controlled to conform to the standards of the society. The party controls people’s lives off of three founding philosophies “war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. (Orwell 26) War is peace refers to the fact that if the party always frames another enemy to direct all hate towards.
Other examples of injustice that give rise to feelings of despair and alienation include Red's futile attempts to be given parole. The general atmosphere of corruption and violence is expressed in numerous examples of brutality by the guards and theft on a large scale by the Warden. At the start of the film we see a newly arrived prisoner bashed into unconsciousness by the guards. This moment is shot in a half -light which adds to the sinister atmosphere of this scene. As well, the mise-en-scene of the prison walls and the cells looms above the heads of the guards and their victim giving the impression that he is totally trapped and without any hope of help.
If people tired to go against the government, they would be punished, and possibly killed. Due to the low intelligence, nobody could think of overthrowing the system except Harrison, George and Hazel´s son, who was a genius and resistant to the handicappers. “Harrison Bergeron age fourteen has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely
Men are constantly being persuaded and forced into sexual contact with not only former inmates, but correctional officers as well. One recollection by Garrett Cunningham, an inmate at the Luther Unit in Navasota, states that he was handcuffed on his way to the shower facilities, raped by an officer, and then forced to shower afterwards. He was then told that if we was to tell anyone of the incident, he would be placed in a “rougher unit where he would be raped all the time”. Whenever an inmate pleas and cries about being sexually assaulted, they get ignored and laughed at. Women are also subject to sexual abuse by the correctional officers and surprisingly, the former women inmates as well.
