Choices In the beginning of this story Tom was a little boy and only really knew of the Ute ways that his mother and fathering were holding on to. Although his parents held on tightly to the way of the “Indian life” Tom began to learn English. In my opinion he should have never learned our language whether or not he went to live in town with Blue Elk. If he had never learned English or if he had refused to learn it he could have ignored everyone and what they were trying to teach him. It was no different being taught by Red. I believe Tom could take care of himself, although if he didn’t go with Red and ride in the rodeo he would have been miserable. Living in town and going to school doing The same things he would have always done if not for leaving town and experiencing new things and making different choices. After Tom had recovered from being nearly crushed in his last rodeo his travels had brought himself to Jim Woodward. He then decided to make the decision to take on a job working at Woodward’s property. Tom spent his time on Woodward’s property pretending to be excited about herding sheep. But then after a bear attack Tom decided to go on a hunt. A hunt for the bear that had attacked Woodward’s sheep. Tom went on this hunt so he could shoot the bear in defense of Woodward’s sheep and in hope another wouldn’t come back and take more sheep. I think he did this more for himself because it was an open opportunity to get back to his roots. If he never went he never would have seen the bear, or realized he still had connections to the old life. He never would have noticed the stars nor had his memories of when his life was easy. Going to kill that bear was one of the best decisions he made. It brought him back to his roots and helped him finally find
