As a professional, I have a professional responsibility to engage in continuous professional development. This means taking action to keep my skills and knowledge up to date and seeking to improve my capabilities across the range of tasks I carry out daily. Continually improving my knowledge is essential to my role and ensures that I have skills and knowledge needed to create the best provision for children. I need to be aware of the most up to date legislations and guidelines, including the EYFS and welfare requirements.
It is important to remain completely professional at all times because you are performing a duty of care. If a staff member has any issues they should be discussed directly with a manager as soon as possible, so the best standard of work can be carried out. In my role as a carer it is important to reflect on activities in the work place because we can assess what activities certain service users enjoyed or didn’t enjoy, and that helps create more suitable activities for the service users in the future, experiencing different activities can teach me new skills like how to work with service users that have less mobility, or have difficulty understanding complicated tasks. Professional development enables an organisation to keep up to date and to change proactively so that their service is relevant and appropriate. Planned development is listened to achieve specific outcomes that may be either focused on the needs of an individual and may contribute to the learning needs of an organisation. Learning new skills and refreshing training enables me to progress, and achieve within my career and working practices. Personal development not only benefits an individual, but also the organization, and the residents who receive the services. The focus of training tends to be on the staff group delivering the services, to ensure that all recommendations and standards are achieved.
I can also review pass work to gain a further understanding and feel for what standards are expected for employees of the company. Accurate information is the most powerful tool of any officer or manager in this industry. To know where a job stands at any time is a necessity if we are to stay at the top of our profession. A source independent of any job is more likely to retain its objectivity. This empowers management to take as much corrective action as is needed.
