Flynn Brighton Beach Memoirs is a comical play written by Neil Simon back in 1982. Set in 1932, the play focuses on two main families struggling through the hardships of the “Great Depression” in New York City. Eugene, the main character, writes in his memoir what is going on in his family during these hard times. Being only a little younger than fifteen, Eugene is going through puberty during the play; this cause many humorous parts in which Eugene speaks in monologues to the audience. Aside from Eugene adding in entertaining comments, the players are truly trying to stay afloat during this “Great Depression” flood. From Stanley debating on whether he is going to write an apology letter to his boss, to Nora wanting to run away and be an actress, there seems to be no end to the hardships of this depression. The Jerome family consists of Jack; Stanley; Eugene; and Kate, the mother, while the Mortan Family is made of a pair of daughters, Nora and Laurie , and a single widowed mother, Blanche. Having lost her husband Dave to cancer six years prior to the beginning of the play, Blanche does not have the money to support her own family. Luckily for Blanche, her sister and her have a best friend relationship. The Jeromes allowed the Mortans to move in with them, during these rough water. Now the goal is to find Blanche a husband. Flynn 4 BLANCHE: I’m having dinner with someone. KATE: You’re having dinner? With a man? That’s wonderful. Why didn’t you tell me? BLANCHE: With Mr. Murphy.
