Fish Revenge Diagnosis of patient is CELLULITIS. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and tissues beneath the skin. Cellulitis is an infection that also involves the skin's deeper layers: the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Cellulitis is a common skin infection caused by bacteria. Normal skin has many types of bacteria living on it. When there is a break in the skin, these bacteria can cause a skin infection. Skin in the infected area will become red, hot, irritated, swollen, and painful. (www.nlm.nih.gov, Linda J. Vorvick, MD) Factors leading up to the emergency room visit with this patient in this case, the wound was not properly taken care of, which allowed the infection to spread, causing Richard to go to the emergency room. Patient cleaned cut with peroxide and applied a Band-Aid, when he should have washed it thoroughly with soap and water and applied an antibacterial cream every day. Cover with a bandage and change it every day until a scab forms. And watch for redness, pain, drainage, or other signs of infection. (www.nlm.nih.gov, Linda J. Vorvick, MD) The fish tooth led to an infection, because seawater is full of infectious microorganisms. All wounds, even minor cuts and scrapes, should be treated as contaminated and potentially serious and should be carefully cleaned to prevent infection. Some wounds, like in this case a bite, always carry a high risk of infection, especially because the wound contained imbedded foreign material (the tooth of the fish). This wound should have been left open to drain and medical consultation should have followed immediately; these wounds require antibiotic therapy and careful follow-up. Yet, an infection would still occurred, whether the tooth of the fish was in the wound or not, because of the bacteria that gotten into the wound and because the wound was not treated properly.
