In the world of medicine, a patient can access many valuable assets. Being a nurse is more than a job for me, it is a treasure. The pride of saying, "I am a nurse", is immeasurable. According to the American Nurses Association, the definition of nursing states that "nursing is the protection, promotion, and abilities, prevention of illness and injury alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations".(ANA 1). However, nursing is more can be attributed to more than that. Throughout this piece, I will discuss what I believe to be the core characteristics of nursing. My personal philosophy and values of nursing include knowledge, time management, teamwork, caring, compassion, patient advocacy, and honesty. These are the essences of nursing. Firstly, knowledge is the core of success in this career. As a nurse, you must know about the nursing process - the essential core of practice for a registered nurse to deliver complete patient focused care. The nursing process includes five major steps: assessment, diagnosis, outcome, implementation, and evaluation. A good nurse needs to attain more than a textbook knowledge. One must apply additional skills efficiently in the work place. Application of communicational as well as textbook knowledge is much more important. Nursing is a lifelong learning process; something new could be learned every day, thus an open mind and a longing for increasing knowledge is essential. Time management is a key point to help thrive in this field without stressing out. In order to provide safe, effective, and quality care, a nurse needs to be organized and timely. You 2 have to plan your day from the starting of the shift due to the unpredictable nature of the job. One must be able to
