Nurses will always experience multiple case scenarios, each one different from the other where his/her competency as a healthcare professional is summoned. In situations like this, it helps to have a standard where we will be able to base our decisions and actions. Critical thinking is indeed necessary to understand these standards. As healthcare professionals, we are expected to perform our duties with outmost competence and knowledge. To do this, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) established the National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2005) as our guidelines in the effective and efficient delivery of nursing care. In this standard, the need to understand and adhere to every competency is strongly manifested. This is our very entry into the nursing profession. This also gauges if a graduate nurse is prepared to fulfill the roles of a nurse and if not, checks which key competency the student will need to develop more. Hally (2008) said that it is in 1990 when the Australian Nurse Registering Authorities Conference (ANRAC) first developed the competencies for registered nurses in Australia. The successor organization was the Australian Nursing Council Incorporated or ANCI. The ANCI and other Australian nursing regulatory authorities then adopted these standards and in 2004, the ANCI became the Australian Nurses and Midwifery Council or ANMC. From then on, the competency standards have continued to be in the process of reviewing and updating to be at par with the current trends and accordance to the latest research. This is how the competency standards for enrolled nurses, midwives and nurse practitioners have materialized. It serves as a benchmark where the performance of a nurse is measured and is evaluated.
