Nicolas Perez-Sar 2/2/12 AP Psych Drug Project Phencyclidine, also known as PCP, is a recreational dissociative drug. It was created in the 1950s as an IV anesthetic. It comes in forms of tablets, capsules, liquid or white or colored powder. It can be snorted, smoked, injected, drank, or eaten. Most often the crystalline powder is sprinkled on a leafy substance (mint, tobacco, or marijuana) and then smoked in rolled cigarettes. Some street names for the drug are Angel Dust, Ozone, Wack, and Rocket Fuel. When snorted or smoked it rapidly passes to the brain to disrupt vision. It alters the action of dopamine which is a neurotransmitter responsible for the euphoria. Physical effects at a low PCP dose, which is 5 mg or less, are shallow,…show more content…
The National Institute on Drug Abuse’s 2010 Monitoring the Future study reported that 1 percent of 12th graders had used PCP. The drug was mostly popular in the 70’s and only 13 percent of high school seniors have used it. In March of 2009 the Washington Post reported that 1- percent of adults in D.C.’s justice system tested positive for the drug. Ketamine is a drug used in human and veterinary medicine. Abuse of the drug gained popularity when users discovered that it has the same effects as PCP. Since it has anesthetic properties Ketamine also reportedly ahs been used by sexual predators to incapacitate their intended victims. The drug is given by medical professionals before surgery. Some street terms are Green K, Jet, Ket, Purple and Super acid. The drug is either a powdered substance that is added to marijuana or tobacco or a liquid form mixed with beverages.
