He received much physical help from wife Eleanor. He also remained active in politics. During this time, Roosevelt was governor of New York and was a perfect candidate for the presidency. (Black, 191) However, he was focused on the citizens of America due to the devastation caused by the stock market crash of 1929, which was the start of the great depression. There were other causes of the great depression and not just due to the crash of the stock markets. Farmers during these times were experiencing their own great depressions due mainly to overproduction. By 1932, almost one-fourth of Americans in the workforce were unemployed. (Beard, 114) President Hoover took steps to lessen the effects of the crisis, but made little change. (fdrlibrary.marist.edu) Both Hoover and Roosevelt waited for change to take place of its own. However, when nothing was making progress, Roosevelt insisted that action must be taken if America wanted to see improvement. Roosevelt was reelected as governor 1930 and in 1932 he ran for the presidency. Americans at that time were in desperate need someone to save them from the depression. Desperation inflicted most American homes and they were in search of new hope. (Coker, 142) Roosevelt ran against candidate Herbert Hoover. During one of his last political meetings, in 1945 FDR attended the Yalta Conference with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in order to discuss reorganization due to the recent war. (Beard, 407) Afterwards, Roosevelt returned to his hometown of Warm Springs, Georgia and on April 12, 1945 he passed away, suffering from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. His two cousins were with him, Laura Delano and Margaret Suckley. Also by his side was his former mistress, Lucy Rutherford. (Coker, 168) America was unprepared for his death, although some noted that he looked rather sickly and tired in recent photographs and conferences. Franklin Delano Roosevelt is considered not only one of the most inspirational presidents that ever ran in office, but one of the most inspirational individuals that ever existed. He prospered by leading America through a tough time during the Great Depression as well as one of the greatest wars in history known to man. (fdrlibrary.marist.edu) He created many programs that lessened the hardships that so many Americans faced during this time.
