1a In the Childcare Act 2006, it became an entitlement for all 3 and 4 year olds in England to receive free part time education of up to 15 hours a week for at least 38 weeks of the year. The government has funded local authorities to ensure every child receives free education before reaching school age. Early year’s provision is really about supporting very young children in school, this is different to the way children learn in Key Stage 1. The difference is, the concept of Early Years is based on learning through play rather than a formal education. The Early Years Foundation stage was revised in England in September 2012, this was to set out one standard framework for learning, development and care for all children from birth until the children reach the age of end of Reception year. In each country Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the framework for learning, developing and care is distinct from England. In English schools the Early Years Foundation Curriculum runs from the ages of 3 to 5 years and therefore the framework is used in Reception and Nurseries. Learning with young children in the Early Years focuses on engaging children in activities that involve particular ideas in the classroom. For example, children the lesson may involve numbers or writing language activities. Children are also able to work independently and choose what activities they would like to be involved in outside the classroom. This way of learning, will encourage the children to be more independent. 1b There are four main types of mainstream state schools which are funded by local authorities and have to follow the national curriculum. 1. Community schools - These schools are owned by the local authority and have close links to the local community. 2.
