The Meaning of Gregor's Transformation in Kafka's 'The Metamorphosis'

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka Imagine waking up and realizing that you had just been transformed into a gigantic beetle. Well in the story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka that is exactly what happens to the main character of the story Gregory Samsa. He worked all his life to pay off the debt that his parents couldn’t pay for. In the story is it up to the reader to determine if the transformation is metaphor or a reality. There are so many debates on what exactly is the meaning of the transformation. In an analysis essay by Conor Fitzgerald he describes that Gregory life was like a beetle and that is what Kafka was trying to explain. Gregory never did anything for himself he was always trying to satisfy his parents. Gregory life was so boring just like a beetle and his relationship with his parents was bad already before and after his transformation and his sister not supporting him just put the icing on the cake to end his life. So was Gregory transformation a physical change or psychological change. “Gregor’s apparent lack of concern over his condition begs a query as to whether any physical change actually occurred” (Fitzgerald 1). Many can say that if they had transformed into a beetle they would be freaking out or saying why is this happening to me. Gregor had a boring life which is not so different from the life of an insect. All Gregor did was work and provide for his family. He didn’t have friends only his sister and didn’t do anything for fun like a hobby he was anything but a normal human being. Many can draw lines on how Gregor’s life and an insect’s Velasco 3 life are very similar. Most insects are workers that provide for the rest of the group. So we can compare that he provides for his family in the same way that an insect provides for the nest or hive. I agree with Fitzgerald on this aspect “His family’s existence rests solely on his
