Amy Coombes P1 – Explain the different types of communication in the Health and social care environment Communication is the exchange of conversation/information by speaking, writing or using some other medium. In health and social care different types of communication are used in order to make sure information is given/received in the correct way. One to one communication When interacting with a new person a positive emotional atmosphere must be created so the individual feels comfortable and ready to receive the information. (Greeting/warm up stage) Once the person feels relaxed they will be prepared to talk about issues/receive information. (Conversation/information exchange) After the conversation the person should be left with a sense of value and respect by using an appropriate phrase. (Farewell/winding-down stage) Group communication Communicating in a group shares the same aspects as one to one communication with additional elements. Key factors for good group communication include: Eye contact, positive atmosphere, taking it in turns to talk, relaxed environment. Group communication will not be positive unless everyone wants to engage and get involved. Some may stay quiet as they are worried about the reactions people may have to what they have to say, it can be easy to become threatened by formal group communication. This is group maintenance; making sure the communication is flowing smoothly. In formal situations such as meetings or lessons, there is often a group leader who is usually there for support such as; encouraging everyone to make their points, making sure people take it in turns and keeping the group focused. When taking part in group communications there are a few things to consider.
